Why Cinnamon Is My Go-To Natural Fungicide for Orchids

If you have been growing orchids for any length of time, you know that rot, fungus, and bacterial infections can devastate a collection overnight. Years ago in Venezuela, I learned a lesson about plant recovery that completely changed how I treat orchid diseases.

We had just received a massive shipment of Phalaenopsis orchids from Thailand. When the order arrived, nearly 90% of the plants were dying from severe bacterial rot. To save them, I had to cut away all the infected leaves until only clean, healthy tissue remained at the center base of each plant. I immediately applied raw cinnamon powder directly to the cuts and central growth points. The results were incredible: 90% of those bare bases fully recovered and produced healthy new growth.

Since that day, cinnamon has been an essential tool in my orchid care routine. Here is how and why it works so well:

  • Natural Fungicide & Bactericide: Cinnamon contains naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds that dry out infected areas while preventing pathogens from spreading.

  • Essential for Divisions: Whenever you split or divide orchids (Cattleya, Oncidium, Vanda, etc.), applying cinnamon to the fresh cuts acts as a natural seal to protect open wounds.

  • Treatment & Prevention: It works effectively on root rot, crown rot, and leaf spots across almost all orchid genera.

If you are looking for an accessible, 100% natural way to safeguard your plants, keep a container of powdered cinnamon on your workbench—it has never disappointed me.
